About Tung's Credentials & Training
What makes your approach to Ashtanga different from other teachers?
My training comes directly from the source - I've studied 4 times in Mysore, India at the Sharath Yoga Centre (SYC) and hold official authorization. This means I teach the authentic method exactly as passed down through the Jois lineage. My approach emphasizes proper breathing, precise alignment, and gradual progression - never rushing students through poses but building a strong foundation that will serve you for life.
Why did you choose to study in Mysore, India?
Mysore is the birthplace of Ashtanga yoga where Sri K. Pattabhi Jois established the practice. My journey began with a 200-hour Teacher Training Certificate in Mysore, followed by 3 dedicated study periods at the Sharath Yoga Centre (SYC). Each trip deepened my understanding - not just of poses, but of the philosophy, breathing techniques, and teaching methodology that can only be absorbed through direct transmission in the traditional setting with Sharath Jois, the current lineage holder.
What does SYC (Sharath Yoga Centre) authorization mean?
SYC authorization is the highest credential in Ashtanga yoga, granted only to dedicated students who have demonstrated deep understanding of the practice through years of study in Mysore. It means I'm officially recognized by Sharath Jois to teach the authentic Ashtanga method. This authorization ensures you're learning from someone who has been personally trained and approved by the current lineage holder - a guarantee of authenticity and quality you won't find with casual yoga teacher training programs.
How does your personal practice influence your teaching?
I maintain a daily personal practice, continuing to study and deepen my understanding of the method. This isn't just my profession - it's my life's dedication. My own journey through challenges, breakthroughs, and continuous learning allows me to guide students with authentic understanding. I teach from experience, not just theory, sharing insights that can only come from walking the path myself for many years.
Getting Started with Ashtanga
I'm a complete beginner - can I start with you?
Absolutely! My Mysore-style classes are perfect for beginners because you learn at your own pace with individual attention. I guide each student through the sequence step-by-step, ensuring proper foundation before progressing. Having trained directly in Mysore, I understand how to adapt the practice for all levels while maintaining its integrity. Many of my most dedicated students started as complete beginners - what matters is consistency and willingness to learn.
What should I expect in my first class with you?
I'll personally assess your current level and introduce you to the fundamentals: proper breathing, basic postures, and the philosophy behind the practice. We'll start slowly, focusing on alignment and breath awareness rather than advanced poses. You'll learn why Ashtanga is called a 'moving meditation' and how each element serves your overall development. My goal is to give you a solid foundation that honors the traditional method while respecting your individual needs and limitations.
How is your teaching different from regular yoga classes?
Unlike general yoga classes that mix different styles, I teach pure Ashtanga as learned in Mysore. This means precise breathing techniques (ujjayi pranayama), specific gaze points (drishti), and energy locks (bandhas) - elements often overlooked in modern yoga. My classes focus on building internal heat and strength while developing a meditative state. Students don't just learn poses; they learn a complete system for physical, mental, and spiritual development that has been refined over generations.
Practice & Teaching Methods
How do you handle injuries or physical limitations?
My Mysore training taught me to work skillfully with each student's unique needs. I provide careful modifications, alternative poses, and therapeutic approaches when needed. Having practiced through my own injuries, I understand the importance of intelligent adaptation. Whether you have back issues, joint problems, or chronic conditions, I'll work with you to develop a sustainable practice that supports healing rather than causing harm.
What can I expect from long-term practice with you?
Students who commit to regular practice experience profound transformation - not just physical strength and flexibility, but mental clarity, emotional stability, and spiritual growth. I guide advanced students through the second series and beyond, supporting their journey toward teaching authorization if that's their path. Many of my long-term students have developed unshakeable self-practice routines and carry the practice as a lifelong spiritual discipline.
