The Power of Not Giving Up: From Yoga to Life
Questioning the Practice
When we face challenges, the thought of giving up comes up. Today I want to talk about exactly that -- giving up. As an Ashtanga yoga practitioner, I've questioned myself plenty of times:
"Why wake up so early to practice? Why put myself through such a demanding yoga routine?"
I've honestly thought about quitting more times than I can count.
Feeling Lost on the Business Side
Looking back, it wasn't just about the practice. It's also been part of running Tapas. I've asked myself:
"Why work so hard teaching a style of yoga that isn't mainstream? Why pour so much effort into running this space?"
Those questions left me feeling lost and tempted to walk away.
Yoga Is Life
But here's what I've come to understand: yoga is life, and life is yoga. Every day brings all kinds of challenges -- not always physical ones. Sometimes they're emotional or mental. They can make us feel uncomfortable and discouraged, and they shake our resolve to keep going.
Yet it's exactly these challenges that taught me why persistence matters.
Encouraging My Students
In my classes, I often see students face a pose that looks impossible, or feel tired and frustrated mid-practice. That's when I tell them:
"Try it once. Try it one more time. Hold on a little longer."
Even if you only hold it for 1 second today, that's progress. That's growth. Every moment of persistence -- whether physical or mental -- is paving the way forward.
Remember, yoga doesn't just strengthen your body. Your mind grows stronger too.
The Strength in Staying
Whether it's yoga practice or life's challenges, staying with it teaches us persistence. When we choose not to give up, when we give ourselves a bit more patience and time, we'll find that every small step of progress adds up to big change.
I hope you'll not only challenge yourself in class but also enjoy the growth those challenges bring. Let's keep at it together -- becoming more resilient, more patient, and turning every challenge into our strength.
